Muslim lives, told by the people living them

We are a media project documenting Muslim communities as they actually are, in their own words and on their own terms. Ordinary, complicated, unremarkable, and almost never shown that way.

Why we exist

Our communities are constantly described, and almost never asked

Most media about Muslims arrives from the outside. It is quick, it is framed around conflict, and it is gone by the next news cycle. What never gets recorded is the ordinary: the work, the families, the humour, the quiet decades of building something.

01

We ask, then we listen

Every story starts with the person whose story it is. They choose what matters, what stays in, and what is nobody's business.

02

We record it properly

Real interviews, real time, real craft. Not a soundbite pulled from a longer conversation and cut to fit somebody else's argument.

03

We give it back

Every piece is shown to the community it came from first, and stays freely available to the family and the institution it belongs to.

What we make

Different formats, one purpose

We work in whatever form the story needs. Some lives are a short film. Some are a photograph and four paragraphs. Some are four hours of someone's grandfather talking, and that is the most valuable thing we own.

Film

Short documentaries

Ten to twenty minute films made with, not about, the people in them. Screened first for the community, then released freely.

Archive

Oral histories

Long form recorded conversations with elders, founders and organisers, transcribed and preserved before the memories go with them.

Portraits

Photo essays and profiles

Photography and writing on people who have never been profiled by anyone, and probably assumed nobody would ask.

Open to all

Tell us your story

If you, your family, or your masjid has something worth recording, get in touch. Most of what we make starts with someone reaching out.

Know a story that should be recorded?

Tell us about it. We would rather hear from you than guess what matters.

How we work

The rules we hold ourselves to

Recording someone's life is a responsibility, not a content opportunity. These are the commitments we make to every person who agrees to sit down with us.

You keep control of your story

Nothing is published without the agreement of the person it is about. If someone changes their mind, the recording does not go out. That holds whether we have spent an hour on it or a year.

Community sees it first

Every piece is shown to the people and the institution it came from before it reaches anyone else. Corrections get made. Objections get taken seriously rather than managed.

The work stays free

No paywall, no advertising, no licensing the footage out to someone who will cut it into a different argument. Families and institutions get a copy of their own material to keep.
